The Answers to All of Your Winter Hair Woes
Now that our days of salty waves and sunny skies are behind us, many are dropping their guards when it comes to keeping their locks safe. Unfortunately, winter can be just as dangerous for your ‘do if you aren’t careful. Read on to learn how you can keep your hair healthy and gorgeous throughout the coming season.
How to calm static.
Static becomes very common during the winter months when the air becomes more dry. The best way to combat it is to keep your hair moisturized. Use a hydrating shampoo like Kenra's Professional Moisturizing Shampoo and don’t skip out on conditioner. Depending on your hair type, it may take a little more help…
- For straight hair: Use a serum like Pureology's Smooth Perfection Smoothing Serum to provide extra moisture (just don’t go above the tips or it will weigh your hair down and make it look oily).
- For wavy hair: With thicker locks, you can use heavier products without hurting volume too much. Try a conditioning spray like Kenra's Platinum Style Prep Detangling Primer Spray.
- For curly hair: You can use even heavier creams than those with fine or medium hair. Try DevaCurl’s Heaven In Hair Intense Moisture Treatment.
How to keep your hair from going flat when you remove your hat.
Use it to your advantage. Because hats trap heat, your hair will naturally take whatever shape they are in when under your hat, so style your hair in a way that will amp it up at the roots. For long hair, pull it back into a bun and shake it out when you remove your hat. For short hair, just twist it into four tiny buns and pin them into place, then let ‘em loose and restyle your ‘do.
How to treat dull hair.
The dry, windy air can really do a number on your cuticle, causing it to lose its shine. Of course, things can get a lot worse with the addition of hot tools and dye. Luckily, there are a couple of ways you can retain your hair’s glorious sheen. Start by making sure your shampoo contains B5 or panthenol which will help keep your strands smooth. Try Kenra's Professional Volumizing Shampoo (which is actually formulated with both ingredients). It also helps to spritz a heat protectant onto your brush when blowdrying as it will prevent your hair from drying out. We like Kenra's Thermal Styling Spray 19.
How to combat a dry scalp.
With colder air comes less humidity which will dehydrate your skin and could lead to a dry, flaky scalp. There are a couple of ways you can help remedy this. To start, use a soft boar bristle brush to massage your scalp before getting into the shower. This will help eliminate any oils, products, or other gross materials (like dead skin cells) that have built up overtime, allowing for a more thorough clean. It’s also a good idea to use a moisturizing hair mask (like Kenra's Professional Nourishing Masque.) to control dryness and get rid of flakes.
