It isn’t a secret that washing your hair too much can be a big problem: it strips necessary oils from your strands, leaving you with frizzy, dry locks that are far more prone to breakage. Yikes! However, there seems to be a lot of conflicting advice out there about just how often you should wash. Some say you should do so every other day at the most, while others can go a whole week without getting their hair wet and still hit the streets without looking like a grease monster. What’s the right answer here? It all depends on your hair type…

For Fine-Haired Gals

Your hair type tends to get oily a lot faster than those with more volume, so you might think you should be scrubbing those strands daily. Not true! Too much shampoo and your locks will become, well, locked (re: they’ll lose movement). Try to limit your washing to three times a week and use a light conditioner. Invest in a great volumizing shampoo, like Kenra's Professional Volumizing Shampoo, to give your hair extra life.

For Thick-Haired Girls

Your hair type allows you to go for far longer periods without washing (about three to four days). If you struggle with managing your locks, make sure you use a smoothing shampoo that has advanced smoothing micro-emulsion cleanses. We love Pureology's Smooth Perfection Shampoo.

For Curly Girls

It takes much longer for oil to make its way down your strands with this hair type. That’s why you don’t have to wash your hair more than twice a week. Just be sure to use a moisturizing shampoo and, if possible, a cleansing conditioner to help eliminate any excess oils while still keeping your hair hydrated. Above all, keep sodium lauryl sulfate out of your strands. For this hair type, we recommend  Kenra's Professional Moisturizing Shampoo.

For Color-Treated Hair

Dye makes your hair more porous, and so if you shampoo too much, the color of your strands will fade quickly. Limit your washing to twice per week and use a color-preserving shampoo like Pureology's Hydrate Shampoo.

For Keratin-Treated Hair

You want to preserve the protein in your hair, so you need to be careful in this situation. Wash three to four times per week with a sulfate-free shampoo. Try Snobgirls' Strongforce Prowash.

For Chemically-Treated Hair

If your hair is chemically-treated it will be much more fragile than the other hair types, so you need to be extra careful with your strands. Shampoo just once per week with a super gentle formula. We recommend PRAVANA’s Nevo Moisture Rich Sulfate-Free shampoo since it is built to repair and nourish hair (it even amplifies hair’s natural lipid layer).

Of course, if you’re already over-washing your hair, your scalp is likely producing excess oils to keep your strands from drying out. Cut back one day at a time until you are washing just the right amount of times per week. Use a dry shampoo and try pulling your hair back on particularly oily days to help you in this process. Within just a few weeks, you should be right where you need to be!
