This is a question a lot of people don’t ask. We grow up using whatever type of brush our mom gives us, never stopping to wonder how it might be affecting our hair, and continue to stick with that into our adult years. But depending on your hair type, this could actually be having a negative effect on your strands. Read on to learn what the different types of brushes are and whether you’re using the right one.

Wide-Tooth Comb

This is one brush most people should be using when detangling. Its teeth have wide gaps which helps prevent breakage. If you have particularly frizzy hair, this may be the best option for you.

Fine-Tooth Comb

The gaps in a fine-tooth comb are much smaller than in a wide-tooth comb. This makes it a great tool for setting your part as well as teasing your hair. The size of the teeth also creates a smoothing effect, taming flyaways.

The paddle brush is very popular because of its versatility. It smooths down strands and is big enough to collect large sections of hair. Those with thick hair will have more success with this brush than those with very fine strands.

Boar bristles are great for those with fine to normal hair. They help re-distribute the natural oils of hair, giving it shine as well as volume.

These brushes are made specifically to be paired with your blowdryer. They lock in heat, allowing your strands to dry faster while giving you the ability to easily smooth and style your hair.

Round brushes allow you to curl and straighten your hair while drying it. Skinny round brushes are particularly helpful when it comes to bangs and shorter locks. Large round brushes can add volume to limp locks and are generally more useful for longer pieces of hair.

This is yet another brush that works well with a blowdryer. The air flow aids in adding volume to hair, making it ideal for those with fine strands.

Half Radial

If you have super short hair (like a bob) and like curving the ends, then this is the brush for you! It’s also great for those with thick hair who want wavy locks without excessive volume.
