7 Simple Hair Hacks You Won't Believe You Didn't Know

The next time you run out of your favorite hair product, don’t freak out! Chances are, you have something lying around your house that will work almost as well. You just have to look in the right places…

1. Calm static with a dryer sheet.

Just grab one from your laundry room and run it over your strands. Easy!

2. Dry/damaged strands? Use coconut oil.

Coconut oil is great for your hair as it contains an abundance of fatty acids and proteins, giving it the ability to keep your hair shiny and hydrated. Mask your strands with the oil pre-shower to deeply condition your hair, or just apply it to your tips to cover up split ends. Start with a tiny bit and add more only as needed. If masking your hair, follow it up with a powerful cleansing shampoo like Sudzz FX’s Nyrvana Purifying Shampoo to prevent filmy strands.

3. Start from the middle of your hair when curling.

Starting here rather than at your ends will give you full, durable waves that last longer. To really lock in the style, use DevaCurl's Flexible-Hold Hair Spray.

4. Don't wrap the last half-inch of hair around your curling iron.

This will help the curls look more natural.

5. Say goodbye to flyaways with hand lotion.

Rub just a pea-sized amount between your fingertips and use it to smooth down any stray pieces of hair.

6. Don’t have hand lotion? Use a toothbrush and hairspray.

Spray the toothbrush and go over flyaways as you would with lotion. Try Kenra's Shine Spray. This superfine mist provides frizz and flyaway control and contains UV protectants to help guard color.

7. Want beach waves without going to the beach? Just mix seltzer and rock salt.

While you don’t want to use this method too much (otherwise it could dry out your strands), it’s an easy solution for the days when you run out of your favorite salt spray. All you need to do is fill a spray bottle with a teaspoon of salt and twenty ounces of seltzer.

8. Use dry shampoo before going to sleep.

If you know your hair will be greasy in the morning and you won’t have time to wash it, don’t wait until the morning to use dry shampoo. Using it at night will give the product time to absorb the oils in your scalp so that you can wake up with hair that looks and feels clean. If you have dyed hair, be sure to use a color-safe formula like Pureology's Fresh Approach Dry Shampoo.

9. Out of dry shampoo? Use spray starch.

Yes, it’s really that simple. In fact, many dry shampoos actually contain starch. Just hold the can at least six inches from your hair and clean up any oily patches with a spray or two, then brush it out.
