Anyone can have sleek, shiny hair -- it's all about having the right tools and developing the right habits. Read on to learn eight simple ways to both retain and improve your hair's shine and smoothness.
1. Use the right brush.
Not all brushes are created equal. If you want to improve your hair’s smoothness and add shine, use a boar-bristle brush. This tool is super effective as it helps distribute natural oils in your scalp, and hairs won’t snag on the bristles.
2. Use heat protectant.
Another big cause of dull strands is heat damage. If you want your hair to retain its natural shine, it is important that you minimize your use of hot tools, and always use heat protectant. We like Kenra's Thermal Styling Spray 19.
3. Use a deep conditioning treatment.
There are so many things we do to our hair that can dry it out from over-washing to excessive use of hot tools. Of course, there are plenty of drying elements in the environment (such as the sun and pollutants). This is why you must make an effort to provide extra hydration and nourishment for your strands. Try adding a deep conditioning mask to your routine, like Pureology's Hydrate Hydra Whip which also retains hair color while protecting it from UV damage.
4. Don’t use cold water when rinsing.
It’s a myth that cold water smooths your cuticle more than warm water does. If you want your hair to look good coming out of the shower, use lukewarm water instead of hot to prevent heat damage, but don't freeze when you don't have to. You also need to be extremely gentle with your hair while it is wet, as this is when it is at its weakest point. Pat your hair dry instead of rubbing it and use a soft t-shirt in place of a towel (which has rough fibers).
5. Use a clarifying shampoo.
Using too many products causes buildup on your hair which dulls the strands. This can easily be remedied with a clarifying shampoo which will strip the products away. If you think you’re using too many products, use a clarifying shampoo once a week in place of your regular formula. Try Kenra's Professional Clarifying Shampoo.
6. Don’t skip out on conditioner.
One of the worst causes of dull, dry strands is not conditioning enough (or using a poor product). For a super-hydrating formula try Sudzz FX’s AquaFix Hydrating Conditioner which contains shea butter and helianthus annus seed oil.
7. Use a water soluble shine serum.
When using a shine serum, you want to make sure it doesn’t contain dimethicone as it sticks to hair, creating buildup that will lead to the strands drying out. Look instead for dimethiconol like Sudzz FX's Zenyth Frizz Eliminator– it’s water-soluble, meaning it will rinse away easily in the shower.
8. Eat enough protein.
