If you’ve lightened your hair and are thinking of coloring your hair back to its original, darker shade, there’s a lot more involved than covering your locks with a darker dye. Just like successfully going from brunette to blonde takes a professional assessment, so does the reverse procedure. It’s vital for getting the results you want without fading or getting a mud-colored result.

“There’s a lot more involved in taking your blonde hair to dark than you really think,” says Nick Mirabella, co-owner of Brick & Mirror Beauty Bar, Parsippany, NJ. With color wheel in hand, Nick explains some of the color science behind going blonde-to-dark. “You have to replace the missing pigment, the missing color molecules in your hair in order to achieve that blonde back to dark look,” he says.

Nine times out of ten, Mirabella says, you’re not going to get the right kind of tones if you try to dye it yourself. You may risk getting a dull, flat color that isn’t what you want. Have questions or comments? Nick invites you to contact him directly @nickmirabella, @brickandmirrorbeauty.
