All types of hair have their challenges, but one of the most annoying things for anyone to deal with is definitely humidity-induced frizz. One minute your ‘do is on the fleek, then you step outside and see gray on the horizon. Before you know it, your sleek and shiny locks seem to have taken on a mind of their own. What’s the solution? Read on -- we’ve got you covered!
The best offense is a good defense, right? If you really want to avoid frizz, you need to attack it before it happens. That means starting with the right shampoo and conditioner!
Hair will absorb more moisture in the air if it isn’t properly hydrated. Keep your locks from being tempted by humidity with lightweight moisturizing shower products. We like Hydrate Shampoo & Hydrate Light Conditioner by Pureology for their color-safe formulas. If your hair is a little thicker or more textured, try Smooth Perfection Shampoo & Conditioner.
While your hair is still damp, run a lightweight serum or oil through it. This will add extra moisture and give you more control over flyaways. We recommend Colour Stylist Cuticle Polisher Shine Serum. Just rub it between your hands and run it from roots to tips for thick hair or mid-length to ends for fine hair.
1. Sealing the Cuticle
This is key! If you want to maximize the effectiveness of the products you’ve added to your strands, you need to lock in their hydration. This is best done with a boar bristle brush. Just aim your blow dryer at the ends of your hair and brush it out (avoid sending the current toward your roots or you’ll just create more flyaways). You want to make sure that your hair isn’t the slightest bit damp when you hit the road or else it will be that much more prone to humidity and all your hard work may go to waste.
Finally, style your hair as desired and finish it off with an anti-frizz hairspray to keep your style in place and add a little extra protection! Try Nevo Super Shape Hairspray by Pravana for its impressive lightweight, frizz-fighting formula.
2. A Few More Tips
There are so many other ways to help keep frizz at bay. A lot of it simply comes down to being gentle with your strands. Once you finish styling, you want to touch them as little as possible (we know it’s hard, especially when you’re using great products, but do your best)! Try to avoid toweling your hair altogether. If, however, you’re really in a hurry then a soft cotton tee or microfiber towel will do the least damage. We also recommend sleeping on a satin pillowcase as this will produce far less friction than cotton which can cause breakage and split ends.
Proper maintenance is also extremely important if you want to fight frizz. Split ends are one of the worst culprits when it comes to frizz, so getting a trim every six to eight weeks is advised. You can also rub a very small amount of pomade between your hands to smooth your hair down (we like Platinum Grooming Pomade 4 by Kenra for its water-based formula).
3. And if All Else Fails…
Say your fantastic frizz-fighting hair formulas are in the mail and you need a quick fix right away. You can run a dryer sheet over your hair (bonus: great scent!) You can also take a spooly or a toothbrush and lightly spray either with hairspray to tame unruly strands. Both methods will give you more temporary results, but it’s better than nothing.
That’s it – everything you need to know to ward off frizz in humidity! Be sure to bookmark these tips for the next time you need them and to share them with anyone else that might be struggling.
