9 Face Washing Mistakes That Are Ruining Your Skin

By Corinne Shoemaker September 15, 2015 0 comments

As easy as washing your face may seem, there’s a lot that goes into doing it correctly. If you aren’t careful, you could end up with a host of problems including dryness, oiliness, or breakouts. That’s why we’ve laid out some common face-washing mistakes so that you know how to protect your skin.

1. Using The Wrong Product

Some cleansers do their job a little too well… You want a product that will totally eliminate any dirt, makeup, or grime, but that won’t take your natural oils and healthy cells with it! You can tell if your product is wrong for you by how your skin looks and feels after using it. If it’s irritated or tight, your product is probably too harsh. If, however, you find that you really need to scrub your skin then it’s probably too gentle. Look for a formula that falls somewhere in the middle.

    2. Using The Wrong Temperature

Yep, it’s a myth – water temperature has no effect on whether your pores open or close. Actually, pores don’t even possess the muscles to do so. The only thing that’s affected by temperature is how much oil your skin produces, and hot water can lead to over-drying. Stick to lukewarm water for a safe yet effective clean.

      3. Using Harsh Ingredients

You should always pay attention to exactly what you’re putting on your face. Harsh ingredients like fragrances and parabens can irritate your skin, so look for gentle formulas. Avoid colorants, synthetic preservatives, and sodium lauryl sulfate as well.

        4. Going Overboard

You don’t want to wash your face too much. Once or twice a day should suffice – any more will mess with your skin’s oil production and could lead to breakouts. In fact, you may want to skip washing altogether if you weren’t very active on a certain day and didn’t sweat or wear makeup. Just rinse with water and moisturize.

          5. Rubbing Your Skin With A Towel

You never want to cause unnecessary tugging and pulling on your skin, which is exactly what happens when you rub it with a towel. Gently pat your face (using a clean towel) instead.

            6. Prolonging Your Moisturizer

A moisturizer should be applied to your skin while it’s still damp. This is the best way to lock in moisture and allow the product to really absorb into your face. It also helps prevent your skin from feeling greasy.

              7. Avoiding Oils

Until recently, many people have avoided using oils on their skin for fear that it would only clog their pores.  With the right oils, the opposite is actually true – they can help clear your pores of dirt and bacteria as well as heal your skin. Try Bioelements’ Sensitive Skin Cleanser which contains olive oil to eliminate impurities while calming and soothing the skin. Other oils that are great for your skin include grapeseed oil, apricot kernel oil, sunflower oil, and almond oil. Work any of these into your skin and wipe it away with a warm damp washcloth.

                8. Over-Exfoliating

As great as exfoliation is for your skin, doing it too often can cause big problems. Use a scrub like Bioelements’ Measured Micrograins which contains extremely fine micro granules for a gentle yet effective clean, and don’t exfoliate more than 3 times per week (less if you have sensitive skin).

                9. Under-Rinsing

If you don’t rinse well enough, your pores will become clogged with nasty residue that can dry out your skin and lead to breakouts. Give yourself a nice thorough cleaning even when you’re busy or exhausted. At the very least, keep some makeup remover wipes handy. Pay special attention to your jawline, hairline, and nose as these are the most commonly under-rinsed areas of the face.
